Ganesh Vandana by Kailash Gaur (Shri Gaur Vipra Lokgeet Mandal)

Galibaazi is a singing tradition of walled city of Jaipur. The tradition started and flourished at the time of Late Maharaja of Jaipur Sawai Ramsingh Ji (1835-1880). It starts around 10 pm and ends just like night Jagaran, in the morning around 4 am with Aarati. Interestingly, it used to happen at the main crossroads (Chauraha) of the area. The group leader is called ‘Pagadibandh Ustad’ and their team members are called ‘Shagird’. Once upon a time Jaipur had 20-30 akharas but now hardly 5-6 groups are active. Due to a supreme court judgement, not to use sound systems, the tradition is near to extinction. Jaipur Virasat Foundation has been working since 2003 with local residents, cultural institutions and Galibaazi Akhara people to save the great tradition of the city.
